HISTORY
The history of the town of POREC is almost 2000 years old. The area was inhabited already in pre-historical times. In 2nd century BC, POREC became a Roman Castrum, in 1st century AD it became the Roman Colony. There are the remains of Roman structures, original Roman streets and monuments as well as the remains of three temples. The best preserved is the Temple of Neptun from 2nd C, AD.
The most valuable and well- preserved cultural monument is the Basilica of Euphrasius, originally built in 6th C, AD in the Byzantine style, enlarged later in 13th and 15th centuries.
The Basilica was built on the foundations of a much earlier church. The apse is ornately decorated by silver and golden figural mosaics that are considered one of the most remarkable examples of mosaic art in Europe. The whole complex of Euphrasius Basilica has been proclaimed the world heritage under the UNESCO protection.
There are Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, palaces and buildings in the central, ancient part of this outstanding Istrian town.
