Reached only by boat, Mljet National Park is located on Miljet island, known to the ancient Greeks as Melita. The Park is on the northwestern portion of the island and encompasses 98 sq km. It is almost completely covered with a stands of Aleppo pine and Holm oak.
Mljet National Park has no snakes, they were eradicated by the Indian mongoose, introduced to control their populations. The mongoose still remain and can be seen hiding out in the underbrush.
Mljet National Park still contains numerous Roman era ruins, which were once the holiday homes of the wealthy residents of Salona. The Monastery of St Mary is a unique site that should not be missed when touring the park. Located on a small island in the center of Big Lake, the Monastery of St Mary was built in the 12th century and is currently being restored.

Mljet is situated on the west dalmatian coast. It is the most western island of all bigger croatian islands. It is situated paralely to penisola of Pelješac, between there’s Mljet channel 8 kms long. West coasts of the island are faced to the open sea looking to far away coast of Italy. Mljet is 37 kms long , 3 kms wide and has a surface of cca 100,4 km2. It is one of the biggest Croatian islands 8th larger island of all. The higest mountain is 514 m high and is called Veliki Grad, is situated over village of Babino Polje. Of other higest mountains there are Veliki Planjak (389m), Sutilija (390m), Vrh od Kantuna (465 m) and Zirine (488 m) as well as some others.
